HELP WANTED
Part-Time Transfer Station Attendant

The Town of Jay is seeking a reliable and community-minded individual to join our team as a Transfer Station Attendant. In this role, you will be the face of our waste management facility, ensuring that residents can dispose of waste materials safely, efficiently, and in compliance with local regulations. This is an ideal position for someone looking for consistent weekly hours in an active, outdoor environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Customer Service: Greet residents, verify permits/stickers allowing access to Jay residents only, and provide clear directions on where to dispose of specific materials.
  • Facility Oversight: Monitor the disposal of all waste materials to ensure they are placed in the correct containers.
  • Site Maintenance: Keep the facility clean and organized by sweeping, picking up loose debris, and ensuring access ways are clear. Plow the yard and keep walkways free of ice and snow.
  • Safety & Compliance: Enforce facility safety rules, deny access to non-residents and prevent the disposal of prohibited hazardous materials.
  • Operations: Assist in monitoring container levels and reporting when hauls are needed. Will be tasked with operating light machinery, skid-steer, compactor, and separating and packaging e-waste and other materials as needed.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain simple daily logs and collect fees as required by facility policy.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Reliability: This is a four-day-per-week position and consistent attendance is critical. Must be able to work unattended in a timely and professional manner. Ability to seamlessly move from task to task to task daily as need dictates.
  • Physical Ability: Must be able to perform manual labor and lift up to 50 lbs. occasionally. Ability to stand for extended periods and work outdoors in various weather conditions (heat, cold, rain).
  • Communication: Must possess the ability to work with the general public in a professional and courteous manner and must have strong interpersonal skills to handle resident inquiries and enforcement of rules with professionalism. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Knowledge: Must possess working knowledge of the materials, methods and practices essential to the operation of the Transfer Station. Must be willing to learn new skills and attend and apply knowledge from mandated training. Must exhibit the ability to work safely following all safety procedures.
  • License: Must possess and maintain a valid State of Maine Class C license.
  • Background: High school diploma or GED preferred; previous experience in waste management or customer service is a plus.
  • Insurance: Must be and remain insurable.

Position Details

  • Location: Town of Jay Transfer Station, 672 Main Street
  • Days and Hours: Tuesday through Thursday 8:45-3:00 and Saturday 7:45-4:00
  • Compensation: $19.00/hr
  • Reports to: Town of Jay Public Works Director
